The University Motor Club’s Lupp Cup inter-club rally is being held on Sunday. Reporting time is 9.30 a.m. at Grid Reference 014705 on map 576, near the north side of the motorway bridge over the Walmakariri River. Timing will be by sealed clock from control to control and the essential map is 575, 1963. The route is about 140 miles and crew numbers are not restricted. ♦ ♦ *

The McLachlan Age and Mileage Trophy for the veteran car covering the most miles in Vintage Car Club events in the last year has been awarded to Mr D. P. Manhart (1914 Hurtu). * * •

The 12-hour sports-car race which was to have been held during the Surfers Paradise speed week next month has now been replaced by a six-hour event which will include both day and night driving. The event comprises eight classes, which include categories for improved production cars. In previous years the event has been restricted to sports cars. The first prize in each class will be $3OO, and there is an outright first prize of $7OO. Other events during the week, which starts on August 24, include drag racing, events for single-seaters and

saloons, motor-cycle racing, and a concours d’elegance. « * * The Vintage Car Club’s Irishman’s Creek rally was this year won by W. Mauger (1924 Vauxhall), with C. Dodds (1929 Vauxhall) second, and R. Shearman (1927 Austin) third. • * * When the Rootes Motors’ works rally driver, Rosemary Smith, won the women’s trophy in the international Circuit of Ireland rally recently, she secured the award for the sixth successive time. She finished third over-all in the event, driving a Hillman Imp, and she has now won the women’s trophy in the event eight times. More than half the 118 starters in the event failed to finish. ♦ * * The Taylor Trophy for the best performance by a veteran or vintage car at the annual all-day trial held by the Canterbury branch of the Vintage Car Club has been awarded to Mr R. B. Scott (Erskine). * * » Tho Canterbury Car Club’s recent rally and dance event was won by G. Smith, with R. A. Silvester second, B. Giles third, P. Davies fourth, and J. Donaldson fifth.

A rally run recently by the Volkswagen Owners Club was won by M. Higham-B. Higham with a loss of only 36.3 points, while the crew of W. McIntyre and B. Cope, which finished second, lost 409.7 points. J. Mitchell-S. Mitchell was third, D. WerrenJ. Werren fourth and M. Johns-P. Wood fifth. The event started at Riccarton and ended at Coe’s Ford. • * * Next Easter the Canterbury branch of the Vintage Car Club is to hold a South Island vintage car rally in Christchurch. The branch expects up to 200 entries from all over the South Island, and the event will be the first South Island rally held in Christchurch for 10 years. The rally headquarters will be at the Show Grounds, and a public display will be held on Easter Sunday. Many newly-restored vehicles are expected to make their first public appearance at the rally, and several of the entries will be taking part in the International rally in Australia the next year.
