Man Killed By Bus Sliding On Ice

An elderly man who tried to escape from a bus as it slid down the icy surface of Middleton Road was killed when he was crushed between the bus and a power pole early yesterday morning according to a Press Association message from Dunedin He was William Watson, aged 67, of 80 Dovecote Avenue. Mr Watson was a passenger in a city-bound bus when the vehicle started to slide shortly after passing Marewa Street With two other passengers he leapt from the bus, but was trapped by the front and forced against the pole. The other two managed to scramble clear. The bus turned a complete circle as it slid down the road and was stopped by a bread delivery van parked at the kerb. It came to rest across the -street, suffering only minor damage. Beside the road was a 30ft drop on to a house. An ambulance racing to the scene was stopped by the ice. The driver climbed the hill with a first-aid kit and blankets. Murchison Death A Nelson report says that a middle-aged man critically injured in a motor accident on the main highway 10 miles

north of Murchison on Monday night, died in Nelson Hospital yesterday. He was Harvey George Birkett, a contractor, of Murchison. Y outh Killed An 18-year-old Hamilton youth was killed almost instantly when the car he was driving collided with another car on the Hamilton-Te Awamutu Road on Wednesday night. He was Ivo Michael Adams, of Rukuhia, Hamilton. He was the sole occupant of the car, which was extensively damaged. A woman In the other car was also injured. The accident occurred about six miles south of Hamilton at 7.15 p.m. Struck By Car A man died yesterday morning In the Hutt Hospital from injuries received on Wednesday night when he was struck by a motor-car at an intersection in Lower Hutt.
