Wairau Incident
Sir, —The caption to your aerial view of Tuamarina refers to “the scene of the Wairau massacre ... where 17 Europeans . . . were massacred by Maoris on June 17, 1843.” In the interests of historical fairness, could you not help to replace this tag “massacre” with the neutral and accurate term, “Wairau Incident”? There is no doubt that the Maoris were defending their land, which they had not sold, against a provocative trespass for purposes of survey.—Yours, etc., ELSIE LOCKE. June 20, 1968.
