Two Graduation Ceremonies

Except for an afternoon procession through the streets, the two graduation ceremonies of the University of Canterbury yesterday were identical in form. Each took about an hour.

In the morning, graduates and diploma winners in arts, law, and commerce assembled at the university and walked by back streets to the King Edward Barracks. In the afternoon those in science, engineering, music, and fine arts walked in procession from the university and along Oxford Terrace. It was the first time the ceremony has been divided. This shortened proceedings for the separate audiences but university officials had to attend both.

While the stage party entered the barracks, a student choir sang “Cantuafiensium Carmen Academicum,” the whole assembly sang the National Anthem, and conferments began. Afterwards the new graduates sang “Gaudeamus” and then returned to the university to take tea with their guests. Because there was seating for 2500, each graduate was able to invite four guests, instead of two as in the past. The Chancellor (the Rt Rev. A. K. Warren), who conferred degrees, said (twice) that sheer pressure of numbers forced the division. The students graduating had made “responsible and successful” use of their time, Bishop Warren said. They had been shown how to seek and to find on the lifetime adventure into knowledge.
