TEXT-BOOK GRANT
Request For Report The Christchurch Girls' High School board of governors will support the Secondary School Boards’ Association request that a report on the inadequacy of free textbook grants, made to the Minister of Education 12 months ago, be published. Asked at a board meeting about the situation in the school, the principal (Miss P. Robinson) said it managed but only by using books which did not date, such as_ Latin, for excessively long periods to make savings for other needs.
The introduction of manynew syllabuses had put a considerable strain on the scheme, said Miss Robinson. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that the initial free text-book grant was generous. Schools got virtually what they asked for. Some schools bought excessively expensive books and now had difficulty in financing replacements of that standard. However, there was no doubt that the change to decimal currency, devaluation, new syllabuses, and the continually-increasing cost of books had all put new strains on the scheme, said Mr Halligan. The remit simply asked that the year-old report be published so that all could see what had been found and recommended.
