EGGS EXPORTED BELOW COST
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 23.
The Egg Marketing Authority reported today that so far this year it had exported about a million dozen eggs at 9c a dozen.
They have been shipped as egg pulp to Britain and Japan to be used in the baking trade. The assistant general manager of the Marketing Authority (Mr M. R. K. Cowdrey) said New Zealand was not traditionally an egg exporting country as it tried to relate its production to domestic demand. However, with bigger units
being used it was difficult to maintain the rate of production and control the margin of surplus eggs. The eggs had to be exported to give poultry farmers a return of 47 cents a dozen in the North Island, and 43 cents in the South Island. Mr Cowdrey could not forecast what total egg exports would be this year. He said that at the moment things seemed to be getting back to normal.
