Sculpture May Be Oldest

(N.Z. Press Xssn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 19. The sculptured head of a bearded man possibly the oldest art object ever found —has been discovered in Afghanistan, the American Museum of Natural History announced today, United Press International reported.

The historic art find was disclosed by Dr Louis Dupree. Dr Dupree said the object, a chiselled limestone pebble about the size of a flattened hen’s egg, dated earlier than 14,665 B.C.

“Two other such head sculptures have been found in Czechoslovakia and France but these were discovered before carbon-14 dating was perfected and so their age cannot be estimated," he said. Carbon-14 testing established that the archaeological level directly above the level where the head was found was 14.665 8.C., give or take about 215 years. Artifacts from the level of the head are currently being tested and appear to go back to about 20,000 B.C.
