Kumai. which will have his last race in the South Island for some time in the Services’ Handicap, the first leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow, completed his preparation with an excellent school at Wingatui yesterday. Ridden by an apprentice. W McEwen, Mr T. K. S. Sidey’s Kurdistan gelding made light of his task over six steeplechase fences at a solid pace
He will leave Wingatui on Saturday and will cross to Wellington on Sunday night. He will have a short spell at Awapuni before going to R. T. Cotter’s stable at Te Rapa.
He will be accompanied by another grey, the Matauraowned and trained Giadaub.
B. L. Hillis, who was associated with Kumai in his successful North Island campaign last winter, has been engaged to ride both horses. They will begin their campaign at the Waikato meeting on Saturday week.
The course proper with the trestles 50ft out was heavy Most of the horses had raced over the Easter, and there were few serious trials.
Palisade (R. N. Pledger) and David Porter (H. J. Powell) ran the first furlong in 13sec and completed half a mile in 54 4-ssec.
Carpenter (E. J. Didham) could have improved his halfmile time of 56 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 43sec. Last Laugh (M. McKewn) and Ma Jeune (E. J. Didham) ran five furlongs together in Imin 9 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 25 2-ssec.
Shewetta (E. J. Didham) and Dunsun (C. B. Lott) were not out for time over five furlongs in Imin lOsec. the first two furlongs in 26sec.
Spanish Fox (C. B. Lott) and New Address (E. Didham) sprinted three furlongs in 41sec.
Waihola (D. A. Adams) earned a ticket to start in the Reveille Hack Hurdles tomorrow when he schooled well in company with Cedar Bank (B. P. Kennedy) over five flights of hurdles. .
