(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 22. The Auckland Regional Authority tonight approved, after a 90-minute debate, the appointment of a community activities officer.
It was a narrow victory for supporters of the scheme, with 15 members in favour and 13 against. The authority will set aside $5OOO in its estimates this year to cover the salary and other expenses of the officer, who has yet to be appointed. His duties will include the study of recreation facilities, trends and needs in the district and the recommendation of policies, procedures and programmes to meet these needs. He will work in close cooperation with regional development and housing authorities, town planning, parks and reserves, local bodies, the education board, Government departments and youth organisations. The chairman (Mr H. D.
1 Lambie) said he would not be surprised if the Government • sponsored the appointment of similar officers throughout ■ the counter. i He considered it was only a I matter of time before such , work was financed by way of . a community tax.
