Trials
Although the main function of the Christchurch Boat Show committee is the arranging of the International Boat and Outdoor Exhibition it is also the organiser of the highly successful Lyttelton Harbour trials. The committee’s biggest effort will be made this year with two trials on September 21.
It has been felt for some time that there is a need for a truly off-shore event in New Zealand and consideration is now being given to conducting a trial from Lyttelton to Motunau, a distance of 100 miles.
The committee hopes to get many more of the small family runabouts back in the water when the 100-mile and 50-mile trials are run in September. It has been found in the past few years that this class of boat has fallen off because owners have felt they had little chance. This is expected to change this year as the committee is anxious to get the runabout back on the water with the assurance that they will have an equal chance of coming home a winner. Much of the success of the trials will depend on weather conditions, especially in the Motunau trial, and for this reason the finer details of events have yet to be worked out. As commercial interests are keen to compete the rules governing the two events are expected to be released soon.
