Upset Win In First Squash

A decisive win by J. a. Foulds, of Collegiate, over the top-ranked Canterbury player, B. M. Garrett (University), featured the opening of the division one squash rackets competition last evening. This surprise win by Foulds in three games enabled Collegiate to gain an upset victory of the much-fancied University side by nine games to eight. In the other match, Christchurch I beat Christchurch II by three matches to one.

The Foulds-Garrett match lasted 65 minutes, and con tained many lengthy rallies. Both players looked fit. but it was not until well into the second game that any constructive squash was played. At that stage. Garrett stopped trying to match Foulds’s harddriving game, produced soma

drop and angle •bote, and forced Foulda to cover a much greater distance in each rally. Garrett's recovery was shortlived, however, as his shots lacked sufficient accurecy to extend Foulds fully, and when, in the Anal game, Foulds found touch with three magnificent drop shots, he scored a welldeserved win.

J. F, Henderson (University) kept J. H. N. Pine (Collegiate) buried in the back corners with pacy length shots, then showed line touch with delicate drops to take the first two games tor the loss of only two points. Pine fought back well in the third game, and aided by Henderson suffering cramp In his forearm, took the game after displaying some excellent forehand angled shota.
