IDENTITY PARADES
Objections In Britain especial Crspdt N.Z PA > LONDON, April 23. Britain’s Council of Civil Liberties has mounted a campaign against police identification parades, which, it believes, carry too much weight with the courts. In a dossier now under consideration by the Home Secretary (Mr James Callaghan) the council details 10 cases where there were grounds, but not legal proof, for believing that the wrong man had been identified in connection with the commission of an offence. The council contends. that judges should warn juries of the dangers of identification evidence, and where wrong identification is clearly established, the accused person should be entitled to compensation.
