Mr C. M. Rout Dead
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, April 23. A life member of both the Nelson and New Zealand Automobile Associations, Mr Cyril Malcolm Rout, aged 78, died in Nelson on Monday afternoon. Mr Rout, who was born in Nelson, was at one time officer in command of the Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast Regiment He was a past master of Lodge Nelson and a Grand Lodge director of ceremonies! For 43 years he was a partner in the legal firm of Messrs Glasgow, Hayes and Rout. He specialised in the interpretation of traffic laws. Mr Rout attended Nelson College and Waitaki Boys’ High School. He was an extramural student of Otago University and completed his examinations for his LI B in 1912. >
In 1915 he enlisted and served in France and Belgium as a member of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was wounded in France. He was commissioned as lieutenant-colonel in 1939 and served with the Nelson-Marl-borough-West Coast Regiment.
Mr Rout was associated with the Nelson Automobile Association for 47 years. He represented the association on the board of the New Zealand Motor World, Ltd, for 27 years, and was chairman of directors. He was a delegate to the South Island Motor Union for 25 years and was a past president and a life member.
He was a private motorist representative on the Nelson District Roads Council. He was patron of the United Services Officers Club. Christchurch, and patron of the Nelson Caravan Club. Since 1958 he had been chairman of the Port Conciliation Committee.
