Unwanted Babies

Sir, —One reads with dismay the report on unwanted babies, and one reads of the increase in illegitimate babies, now being one in eight born. What positive steps are being taken to reduce the alarming number of illegitimate births? What is being done to educate the young people in the tragic consequences of immorality? One suggestion I would make is that third-form girls from both public and private schools be taken to a maternity hospital to see the sad sight of a 13 or 14-year-old girl in labour. Perhaps the distressing plight and distressing sight of the immature, unwed girl of 13 or 14 could make the impact necessary to safeguard them from being in a similar situation. —Yours, etc., POSITIVE. April 21, 1968. [This correspondence is now closed. Ed., “The Press.”]
