Beach Improvements
Sir, —Christchurch is truly a beautiful city. It also has a lovely foreshore. We could do with some improvements here, and still retain the beauty of the sand dunes. Steps up to the top of the dunes; a path for elderly people to walk; seats nestled in the dunes to sit and enjoy a view of the sea, not forgetting their use by the not so old. A lovely sea-view restaurant to suit all types, tastes, and pockets. The whole foreshore from South Brighton to the North could be illuminated for the city dweller and visitor alike to sing its praises. Wftat are the
City Council’s views on improvements?—Yours, etc., J. A. MORGAN.
March 25, 1968. [The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: “A good deal has been spent in recent years on improvements to the foreshore at New Brighton and further improvements are envisaged. While the correspondent’s interest is appreciated, it should be pointed out that some of his suggestions are not very practical. For example, to construct steps to the top of the dunes would be of little avail, as sand would quickly cover them over and even cause sand to spill out on to the roadway. Seats set in the dunes would likewise become a problem through moving sand and, being obscured from public view, could become the targets for vandals’ activities. A certain amount of lighting is provided on the foreshore in the vicinity of the car parks and garden areas at Central and North New Brighton. A privately-owned restaurant is situated on the foreshore at Central New Brighton.”]
