‘STERILISED FROM 16’

Suggestion For Boys (N.Z. FA. -Reuter —Copyright) VANCOUVER, April 22. A Canadian woman doctor has suggested that young men should be temporarily sterilised at the age of 16. Addressing the Federal Royal Commission on the Status of Women, Dr Norma Ellen Verwey said that at that age all young men should be given a free compulsory vasectomy—a sterilisation procedure which takes only 15 minutes and is reversible. The man could be made fertile again when he was ready “to shoulder the social responsibilities of fatherhood”. Dr Verwey admitted the male response to her suggestion would be of “violent indignation”. But she was convinced that male vasectomies would have fewer side effects than female contraception. It was time that men assumed responsibility for birth control, she said.
