TROTTING Fine Field Of Trotters In Addington First Leg

The Army Handicap, the main race for trotters, has been selected as the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway on Thursday. The Air Force Handicap, which has drawn a field of very mixed quality, will be the second leg of this double.

Originally the club intended using the New Brighton Cup as the first leg of the main double, but yesterday, after withdrawals had left a field of only eight, the club secured permission from the New Zealand Trotting Conference to change the order of races to enable the big race for trotters to be the first leg. The limit for the New Brighton Cup is 2:11, and only one horse on this mark— Mister Chips—is in the field. All the others are on 2:10 and faster. The club was unlucky that so many horses on 2:11 graduated to tighter marks, went amiss or were retired after the framing of the programme. The Army Handicap will prove a worthy substitute leg of the double, and given a firm track the trotters should provide a memorable contest.

Bracket: Cadane and Charlie Chan. 7.25 p.m—

Eliminated: Forward Star, Gay Return, Lucrative, Winning Song.

Mighty Chief and French Pass, two of the top-ranked trotters in New Zealand, were not started on the final day of the recent Easter meeting at Addington. Their meeting with C. C. Scott’s bracket of Le Chant and Stylish Major should result in a thrilling race. Stylish Major was a rather unlucky third to Le Chant and Mountain Pride in the New Zealand Trotting Championship on Easter Saturday.

Eliminated: Double Cross. 4.45 p.m.—

Bracket: Doctor Barry and Pancho Boy. 5.25 p.m.—

In that race he was the backmarker on 30 yards. This week he comes in on the limit, while Le Chant, a winner from 24 yards, will start from 12 yards. Both are smart sprinters and they should be capable of racing prominently. In addition there are such smart sprinters as Highland Fortress, Uteena, Towser, and Johnny Gee.

The on-course concession double will be run on the Somme Stakes and the Passchendaele Stakes. Rather surprisingly the club decided against using the Anzac Day Stakes as a leg of one of the doubles. This race has drawn an outstanding field of three-year-olds, which should provide a highlight of the meeting. Acceptances:— 2.15 p.m.—
