MR SHELTON OUT OF HOSPITAL

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 22. Discarding his crutches for a pair of walking - sticks, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) left Palmerston North Hospital this morning after a stay of 20 weeks. The crutches accompanied Mr Shelton in the official :ar to Wellington “in case he gets tired, or wants to get around in a hurry,” as one of the hospital staff put it Mr Shelton, his left leg still in plaster, appeared to walk with some difficulty and a degree of pain. He was injured in a car crash near Foxton on Decem-

ber 2, and was admitted to the hospital’s orthopaedic ward. Both legs were fractured in the crash. One has since healed and the plaster was removed some time ago, but the healing of the left leg fracture was slower.

Mrs Shelton, injured in the same crash, was also in ward 1 for a time. Mr Shelton said this morning he was “glad to go, but sorry in a way.” He will now work from his Wellington .home. He has done a considerable amount of departmental work from his hospital bed. Mr Shelton’s departure from the hospital was delayed by the many farewells he had to make. Kitchen staff lined the windows of the hospital as Mr Shelton walked past. Patients were also at upstairs windows waving goodbye.
