Contest For Knitters

Winners in a knitting contest with a difference were awarded their prizes recently. They were not rewarded for their skill with needles but for their ability to answer questions. Mrs K. M. Best, of 152 Rutland Street, a newcomer to contests, won the first prize of a bone china tea set from Beath and Company, for her short essay and answers to seven questions on the history and techniques of knitting. Wool vouchers were awarded to Mrs R. G. Marsden, of 27 Mavin Road, second place, and Miss S. Pollock, 25 Domain Terrace, third equal with Miss V. A. Reid, 444 Marine Parade, who was not able to attend the presentation.

Clues for most of the questions were found in the store and advertising displays, but all three resorted to reference books to find the origin of the word spinster. Mrs Best and Mrs Marsden are veteran knitters, but the 16-year-old Miss Pollock is a beginner.
