PILL BLAMED FOR DEATHS
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 22. A claim that the birth-con-trol pill might have accounted for the deaths of about 40 women in Britain last year is expected to be one of the main conclusions in a Govern-ment-sponsored report drawn up by the Dunlop Committee on Drug Safety, and to be published in the next few days. A second report, by the Medical Research Council, to be published at the same time, is expected to show that about 4000 pill-users are likely to develop minor bloodclotting disorders after continuous use of the drug.
But it is understood that the experts are agreed that the risk of thrombosis is no greater than that attributed to the smoking of one cigarette a day. “The new findings will not alter the Ministry of Health’s attitude that the health risks are outweighed by the benefits of the drug as an effective contraceptive,” the “Daily Sketch" says.
