Rudolph Dirks, the Germanbom cartoonist and painter who for more than seven decades drew the “Katzenjammer Kids” comic strip, has died in New York at the age of 91.
When he was only 20, in 1897, Mr Dirks, who was later to become known as the dean of American cartoonists, created the mischievous Katzenjammer brothers, Hans and Frizt, at the suggestion of an editor for the Hearst group of newspapers. The comic strip, renamed ‘‘The Captain and the Kids” in 1912, became the oldest continuing comic feature in the world, surviving two world wars and many changes in taste.
Up to the time of his death Mr Dirks was still producing Katzenjammer instalments, but for the last 15 years he had collaborated with his son, John, who said today he planned to carry on the strip.
