TAXATION RETURNS

“Stem Line” Planned

The Inland Revenue Department will take a ‘stem line" this year with employers who fail to submit reconciliation statements by the due date. May 15. “The number of statements so far received for the last financial year is already 50 per cent fewer than at the same time last year,” the District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr C. K. Jones) said yesterday.

“Last year we gave employers a lot of latitude and extra time but not this year. Hundreds of salary and wageearners cannot put in their returns and get their refunds because the employers have not completed their reconciliation statements.”

To yesterday the department had received only 3600 returns from salary and wageearners compared with 7600 at the same time last year. Of-the 13,500 reconcilation statements due only 2100 have been received compared with more than 3100 last year. Mr Jones said the early problem with the supply of return forms for salary and wage earners had been ironed out. He suggested that anyone having trouble completing the return should call at the information counter on the second floor of the Government Life I building.
