Community Nurses
Sir,—l cannot let the letter of “Undecided Nurses” go unchallenged. Once upon a time nursing was the Cinderella of all professions with its long hours and poor pay. Today it is probably one of the highest-paid professions for girls, with its penal rates of pay, shoe and stocking allowance, and uniforms supplied and laundered. Do these girls realise they are lectured by highly-qualified tutors at no cost, their textbooks are supplied free, and they are actually paid while attending lectures? While no-one wants to return to the old days, surely these nurses must realise it costs the country the earth to train them. There is no disputing that they perform a marvellous service to the community, but costs involved in setting, marking and supervising examination papers have risen steeply. Last year School Certificate, University Entrance and bursary examination fees rose substantially. 1 do not recall any public outcry.—Yours, etc., N. McKENZIE. Otaio, April 13, 1968.
