Nelson Top Marist Side

The South Island Marist Easter Rugby tournament, which was played at Ashburton over the week-end, was won by the Celtic Club, of Nelson. Playing bright, open Rugby throughout the tournament, the Nelson side, which was unbeaten, scored 51 points and only had 19 scored against it. The final match of the tour nament, which produced a display of bright football from both Nelson Celtic and St Mary's of Gore, resulted in a win by 20 points to eight to Nelson. Nelson gained the Tournament Shield and Gore was awarded the Geoff Laign Memorial Cup, as runner-up. Twenty matches were included on the tournament programme. Outstanding for Nelson in the final match were W. Bell (captain) and T. Julian (forwards) and B. Rierson at halfback. P. Davies, L. Lynch, T. McAtamney and G. Coughlan stood out for Gore in the forwards while the Gore half-back, I. Butel, was the best of the Gore backs. Scorers for Nelson were Rierson (two tries), Julian, B. Thornally and J. Clifford, tries; E. Hellem kicked a conversion and a penalty. For Gore, J. Curtin dropped a goal and kicked a conversion and P. Roughan scored a try.
