NO NEW GOLFERS IN ROSE BOWL TEAM

C I w e Canterbur y selectors (Messrs S. G. H. Rich and G. J. Ward) have placed their faith in experienced men in choosing the Freyberg Rose Bowl team for the 1968 contest at INgamotu, New Plymouth, next month.

The players originally chosen to fill the top five positions in the Canterbury team for the South Island inter-provincial tournament last month have won selection for the prestige national teams’ event.

In playing order, the team is:—

R. C. Murray (Russley, cap tain), E. H. M. Richards (Russley), J. R. Broadhurst (Russley), D. R. Hope (Harewood), R K. Atkinson (Russley). The reserve is J. F. Logie (Russley) and the manager is Mr D H. Lawrence (Harewood). For the annual eight-a-side match against Wellington, to be played at the Shandon course on May 5, the five Rose Bowl players will be joined by Logie, R. M. Farrant (Waitikiri) and M. R. Blank (Christchurch). J. A. Orr (Harewood) is the reserve. The side chosen for New Plymouth is exceptionally strong, an assessment borne out by the fact that such gifted players as Logie and Farrant have been unable to find places. Of the five men chosen, three—Murray, Richards and Atkinson—have been runner-up for the national amateur championship. Broadhurst, holder of the Canterbury stroke play title, was top qualifier for the national amateur championship in 1966, and Hope, the Canterbury match play champion, was third amateur in last year’s New Zealand Open. After two years in the Otago team, Murray has returned to the No. 1 position in the Can terbury side and he has such a splendid record in Freyberg golf that his inclusion gives the side a flying start. The accom plished international’s last appearance for Canterbury was in 1965 at Waitikiri, when the home team won the Rose Bowl. Richards and Hope were also mem bers of the team on that occasion. As No. 1 last year, Richards

had the best record of all the Canterbury players, so he will give the 1968 team a strong hand at No. 2. Broadhurst’s good form this year deservedly gained him the No. 3 position. Hope won four of his matches at No. 2 last year. It will be a great boost for the team to have Atkinson at No. s—in his pre vious two Freyberg contests he has brought solidity to the lower half of the order with remarkably consistent displays. Fine Teamwork Canterbury has often made up ground on rival teams by the excellence of its teamwork, and the wonderful spirit prevailing among the players. Mr Lawrence is an ideal man to see that

this feeling Is engendered among members of the 1968 team The cancellation of the Christchurch club's Easter tournament at Shirley, because of the great storm, deprived candidates on the fringe of selection of an eleventh-hour opportunity to impress the selectors. The composition of the side, however, suggests that Messrs Ward and Rich had their team fairly well settled before the event. The players' Rose Bowl records for Canterbury are:

RB W H L <r Murray 7 28 6 8 73.80 Richards 5 16 4 11 58.06 Hope 3 9 2 8 52.63 Atkinson 2 6 1 6 50.00 Broadhurst 2 4 2 7 38.45
