Pakistan Champion to coach wrestlers

QOME of Canterbury’s lead- ° ing amateur wrestlers will have a wonderful opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge from the Pakistan champion, Zaman Khan, at the Rothmans Easter coaching school this week-end.

Kahn, who weights 1901 b, has agreed to pass on his great knowledge to wrestlers at the school, which is to be held at Pohangina, about 29 miles from Palmerston North. He will discuss such aspects of the sport as competitive tactics, pinning holds, defence and counterattacks, Japanese wrestling, rules, and prohibited holds. An examination will be held on the completion of the course.

The school promises to be the best ever held in New Zealand. Not since the Swedish champion, Viking Palm, visited the Dominion in 1958 have New Zealand amateur wrestlers had the chance of getting specialised advice from the national champion of another country. It is an opportunity which may not occur again for many years. Three Canterbury wrest-

lers have been chosen for the course: J. Tyler (Crichton Cobbers), J. Lightford (Linwood Toe H Boys Club) and R. Williams (Linwood Toe H). All three represented Canterbury at the 1967 New Zealand championships. Tyler was runner-up in the under 1301 b grade in the last South Island championships at Dunedin and in the Canterbury junior championships won the Ellen Deighton Challenge Cup for being the most improved first year wrestler. Lightfoot is the Canterbury under 1251 b champion and Williams is the holder of the Canterbury under 1541 b championship and the J. A. Mclnnes Cup for the most scientific wrestler.

Canterbury officials who will attend the course are Mr J. A. Mclnnes, an executive member of the national association, Mr W. Straw, the New Zealand president, and Mr A. Pickering, the chairman of the Canterbury association.
