Nausori Remains In Favour For Mile

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND.

Most trainers with horses in the big mile, along with thousands of betters throughout New Zealand, fancy Nausori in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie today.

Opinions on which will be the next best take a wide range but there will be surprise generally if Super Count, Fairfleet, Kalgoorlie, Tara’s Pride, and Rainfall do not acquit themselves well. Nausorl’s trainer, B. L. Hillis, picks Fairfleet as the big danger. B. F. Andrews, who rides Nausori regularly, sees Fairfleet, Super Count and Kalgoorlie as tough opponents. Nausori seems an outstanding prospect. At three years he is a good age for the Easter. His 8-2, which seemed fair enough beforehand, was made to look very favourable when he won at welght-for-age last Saturday and he has already shown himself the colt for a big occasion with a first in the George Adams Handicap at Ellerslie and an equal first in the one at Trentham. On top of such credentials he has the knack of managing soft or easy tracks just as well as he does firm footing. With the packed field, which Is usual, predictions on just how the Easter will be run are always difficult. If everything goes according to the plans of his trainer and rider, Nausori will be one of the leading group all the way. The weather last night and this morning will have decided the chance of Super Count. His prospects will fade if there is further rain. If the track is no worse than easy he will be hard to beat. The firmer the ground the better Barellan will like it. Kalgoorlie and Falrdeet have shown themselves able to gallop well whatever the conditions. The speed will need to be on if Fairfleet and probably Rainfall, Tara's Pride and Springlo are to have chances Otherwise, they will have little hope of getting through the big field. Fairfloet, from the outside and under 9-6, is hardly likely to be anywhere near the front over the first half-mile and Rainfall, Springlo and Tara's Pride are well-known back runners. SICOND LIC Nlpawin, Punjabi, Rontan Consul, and Impetus are notable in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the President's Handicap. Nipawln failed at welght-for-age In the Easter Trial at Te Aroha last Saturday but ran very well the time before for third over the President's Handicap course in the Spence Handicap on January 29. Nipawln did well during a spell between the Spence Handicap and Easter Trial and the easing of the track will be Tight in his favour. Impetus, on the other hand, is next to useless in soft ground. When the conditions suit him he is a capable middle-distance runner as he showed when he won the Awapunl Gold Cup. Selections:— Noon.—Onslow Stakes: First Division Bardall, Superior Star.
