MAGISTRATE’S COURT Man Became Violent When Being Treated At Hospital

While being treated at the casualty department of the Christchurch Hospital a man became violent, Mr yr. F. Brown,' S.M., was told in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The man, whose name was suppressed, pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly behaviour, assaulting Constable H. C. Archbold, and resisting Constable V. Pierce. He was remanded on bail to April 9 for sentence. Mr A. P. C. Tipping appeared for the accused. Sergeant J. P. Downes said the man was being treated at the Christchurch Hospital casualty department about 12.10 a.m. on March 15 when he became objectionable. The police were called and the man was still objectionable. Sergeant Downes said as the defendant stated he did not wish to be treated, he was asked to go, but he refused. He was then escorted out of the casualty department, but he was still being obstreperous so he was arrested and taken to the police station. On the way to the police station the defendant assaulted the driver of the police car by kicking him in the head. He also attempted to escape from the car by unlocking the back dpor. Mr Tipping said his client had collapsed on a street corner near his home and had been taken to hospital by ambulance. Mr Tipping said there could be a medical background to the offence and asked for interim suppression of his client’s name. STOLE FROM POLICE A man who stole *7 from a tin at the Balclutha Police Station on January 37 was sentenced to three months imprisonment.
