9-MINUTE DINNER

It cooks by high frequency electromagnetic waves which penetrate the food and activate its molecules. The oven stays cool but the food becomes piping hot in seconds. Particularly useful for reconstituting meals that have already been cooked, the microwave oven is already in use in a number of commercial kitchens in New Zealand.

In a restaurant it means that a customer can select a meal or a waiter present an order and wait only a few moments to have a full meal presented piping hot and ready to eat. The makers, Philips Electrical Industries, say a steak can be cooked in 25 to 30 seconds and a roast dinner in less than nine minutes. A pre-cooked meal can be reconstituted in 45 seconds. The $2OOO oven is the twokilowatt model. A onekilowatt oven costs $l3OO. The ovens are being shown in a three-day display of the company’s latest products, many of which are not yet on the retail market. They include light fixtures produced from the company's glass plant at Naenae in styles selected from Philips plants throughout the world Another new development is modular furniture. Because of the economic recession, the company’s cabinet plant was not being put to maxi-

mum use so it was used to produce a new range of freestanding wall furniture. Prospects of exports to Australia are being investigated. Also on display are the latest television sets, hi-fi equipment, shavers, records and electronic equipment. The photograph show* Miss Lesley Parkin taking a reconstituted meal from the microwave oven.
