TRAINING PAYS OFF

Long hours of hard training for the Aucklander, G. Smith, are now starting to pay handsome dividends. Competing against the touring Canadian swimming team he became the first New Zealander to break 57sec for the 110 yd freestyle. With the Canadian, S. Gilchrist, within reach of him over the two laps at the Rothman’s international carnival at the Newmarket Pool on Saturday night, Smith recorded the excellent time of 56.75ec.

Only three nights previously he had broken R. Walker’s old New Zealand resident record with a time of 57.1 sec.

It was stroke for stroke between Miss J. Warren (Canada) and the New Zealander, Miss T. Shipston, in the 440 yards women’s medley. Determined not to finish last as in the 220 yards event at Morrinsville when she swallowed some water. Miss Shipston finished only ,7sec behind Miss Warren. With a winning time of smin 32.25ee, the Canadian was 2.2 sec outside the New Zealand record. Results:— Men 110 yards freestyle: 0. Smith (N.Z.) 1, S. Gilchrist (Canada) 2, I. Curry (N.Z.) 2.
