BY WON BEST
Trentham Mile (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Bywon, one of the unlucky runners in stronger company in the Anniversary Handicap o n Saturday, showed dogged qualities in a battling finish with the favourite, Talavera, to win the January Handicap at | Trentham yesterday. Mr G. P. Brown’s five-year-old Byland gelding was ridden with fine judgment by D. A. Peake, wh. held up the grey for the last run at Talavera, and secured a generous response in a punishing finish. There was only half a neck in it. A short length away was Belgarah, which made his run from behind the middle of the field. Roodyvoo, the veteran of the field, showed a glimpse of his best form to secure fourth. Riccarton’s Royal Blue was fifth, weakening slightly in the last 50 yards after appearing to be a possibility for third near the furlong. Surf Boy, which drifted at the start, shaded Thunder cloud for sixth. Thundercloud pulled his way to the front within a furlong and, like many others which have tried pace-making at Trentham. found the task beyond him.
