DRINKING HABITS
“Very Little Trouble” Christchurch's drinking public since the introduction of 10 p.m. closing, and especially over the holiday period, had given very little trouble, Senior-Sergeant O. D. Wilkes, the police officer in charge of licensing, said yesterday. Generally their behaviour had been good. A disturbing feature, however, was that minors were still being served. “Two instance of after-hours trading had been reported in the last week,” he said. “Afterhours trading depends on the calibre of the licensee.. Some hotels can go 50 years without a conviction.” Police patrols had been maintained through the hotels during the holidays. In an effort to ensure that after-hours trading did not develop after the initial settlingin period of 10 p.m. closing sdditional patrols would visit all city, suburban, and country hotels, he said.
