Hanmer Pools Pollution
Sir,—For the second holiday period in succession, the Health Department has done a disservice to the township. Last year it was our water supply, now it is the unwelcome publicity On the pools. The contamination has been evident at irregular intervals over the last year or so. Could nothing have been done before the busiest time of the year? A statement from, the Health Department reassuring the public that it ia quite safe to use the pools would largely offset the damage done by the adverse publicity. In short, are the pools fit for human use or are they not?— Yours, etc., T. T. SHIVAS. January 11, 1968. (The Medical Officer of Health of the Department of Health (Dr L. F. Jepson) replies: “Your correspondent can rest assured that the pools would not be used if the department considered they were unfit for use. As may have been gathered, the contamination of the pools with faecal matter has been the irresponsible action of some persons unknown and the use of bathing costumes is designed to avoid a repetition."]
