NOT ENOUGH POSTAGE

Overseas Air Mail

The Post Office was having to “foot too much of the bill” for insufficient postage on overseas mail, the Deputy Chief Postmaster (Mr C. V. Jury) said yesterday. Many people seemed unaware Or had forgotten that air-mail rates overseas had been increased from January 1, he said. Rather than hold up the mail where shortages occurred the Post Office made them up and where possible asked the senders to pay. But this was not always possible.

Mr Jury said shortages were occurring mainly on letters to Great Britain, the United States and Canada. The new air-mail rate to Great Britain is 28c for each half ounce and 10c for aerogrammes. The second class air-mail rate is 10c for each half ounce.

To the United States and Canada the rate is 18c a half ounce for letters, 8c for aerogrammes and 7c for each half Ounce of second class airmail. Air rates to Australia and surface rates to other Commonwealth countries are unchanged but elsewhere the surface letter rate is 7c for the first ounce and 3c for each additional ounce. New rates are obtainable at any Post Office.
