ADDINGTON MARKET Store Lamb Values Ease Slightly

Buyers again showed most interest in store lambs at Addington market yesterday, but with the onset of hot, northwesterly conditions, it was not surprising that the market was not quite as strong as last week’s.

Corriedales and halfbreds predominated in the store lamb entry, and except for the best stages of the market, values were easier by 20c or 30c. However, quality was not up to that of last week’s sale.

The store sheep yarding numbered 15,250 head, compared with 11,200 last sale. It consisted of 7355 wether lambs, 1575 ewe lambs, 1290 two-tooth ewes, 4588 adult ewes and 442 wethers. Store Lambs While the market for good quality store lambs did not show much change on last sale, other lambs were harder to sell. The wether lamb entry included a large number of halfbreds and Corriedales, and quality was perhaps not quite as good as last sale. Very few Down cross lambs were on offer. The market opened with values 20c to 30c back on last week, but with the arrival of more buyers, good lambs firmed to a par with last week. Romney wether lambs met a sound sale, with values* firm for most of the day, but the Corriedales and halfbreds ranged from firm at the best stages of the sale to 20c or 30c easier. Plain lambs met a rather indifferent sale, and by the end of the sale had shown the most marked drop. A range of values is:— Good average Romney wether lambs, $3.40 to $3.85, with odd sales to $4.05; average Corriedales and halfbreds $3.30 to $3.80, with odd sales to $4.40 and small down to $2. As at previous sales, ewe lambs showed little variation from wether lambs, with the exception of the top lots. Romneys sold steadily from $3.20 to $3.70 and Corriedales and halfbreds from $3.30 to $3.80, with an odd sale at $4.20. One pen of wellgrown Corriedales was passed at $5.55. Leading sales of wether lambs included:— W- s - Clifton Mogg (Oxford), 122 Down cross at $3.80; A. F. Oroft (Omihi), 250 Corriedales at $3.70 to $4.25; J. Upritcbard (Cheviot), 191 Romney cross at $3.80 to $4.20; J. T. Denton (Southbridge). 2M Corriedales at $3.80 to $3.90: A. Prendergast (Rhodes Bush), 168 Romneys at $3.85 to $3.95; Macfarlane and Macfarlahe (Hundalee), 125 Corriedales at $3.65; Estate D. W. Smith (Cheviot), 308 Corriedales at $3.75 to $4.20; Glens of Tekoa Estate (Culverden), 570 halfbreds at $2.60 to $4: Mrs J. G. Jamieson (Kaituna), 255 Romneys at $3.05 to $4.15; R. E. Francis (Hawarden), 138 Corriedales at $3.75 to $4.45.

Leading sales of ewe lambs included:

A. T. Wright (Dunsandel), 102 Corriedales at $5.50; Heathstock Downs, Ltd (Hawarden), 159 Corriedales at $3.70 to $4.10; G. B. F. Neill (Glen Alton), 283 halfbreds at $3.30 to $4.20.

Two-tooth Ewes Although there was a reasonable selection of two-tooth ewes for this stage of the season, competition was not particularly strong, and quite a number of lots looked very reasonable buying. The offering was wellspread among the Romney, Corriedale and halfbred breeds, while there were also pen lots of Border Leicesters and Cheviots. Values could not be quoted as strong as last week, taking into account the quality of some of the sheep. Top price was $6 for a pen of Corriedales, while there was a sale of Romneys at 15.55. Some well-grown, earjyshorn halfbreds from Marlborough looked very well bought at $5.60. Plainer fine-woolled ewes sold from $4.50 to $5, while the

Border Leicesters realised $3.80 and the Cheviots $4.30. Leading sales of two-tooth ewes included:— Balnabreich Farm (Culverden), 196 Corriedales at 5.80 to $6: R. M. Wallace (Waipara), 52 Border Leicesters at $4.30: R. S. Harrison (Domett), 360 Romneys at $5.05 to $5.90. Adult Sheep The adult ewe offering was a fairly large one for a January sale, but many of the ewes were of very plain quality and doubtful breeding-life. As with the two-tooths. there were ewes which looked well bought, for prices were at very modest levels. The best of the one-year ewes sold at 20c to 30c a head above fat price, while there were others at fat ewe value. There were sales of sound-mouthed Corriedales at around $4. with one sale of three and four-shear ewes at $5.20. The best of the Romneys sold from $3.50 to $3.70, but older one-season ewes were realising less than $3. Leading sales of older ewes included: M. A. Forrester (Fernside), 128 annual draft Corriedales at $3.80; T. W. Bamford (Hurunui), 144 annual draft halfbreds at $3.60: R. W. Armstrong (Te Pirita), 76 mixed age Corriedales at $4; R. C. Webb (Mandeville), 123 Border cross at $4.05; D. G. Malcolm (Rowley Mile), 243 halfbreds at $3.30; L. G. Henning (Culverden), 126 five-year Corriedales at $3.75; Netherwood Farm, Ltd (Omihi), 277 five-year Corriedales at $4.50 to $5.05. 149 three and fourshear Corriedales at $5.30 and 68 two-shear Corriedales at $5.75: L. E. Dalzell (CulverdenJ, 76 two and three-shear Corriedales at $4.85; E. R. Wright (Hawarden). 11*8 five-year Corriedaies at $3.60; J. M. Hennessy (Waimate), 195 five-year Romneys at $3.65 to $3.70.
