N.Z. Swimmers Into Finals

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY. The Auckland stars, Miss G. Stirling and R. Beddie, yesterday morning won their way through to the finals of their events in the New South Wales swimming championships in Sydney.

The fifteen-year-old Miss Stirling clocked Imin Msec to finish second in her heat of the open women's 100 metres backstroke, the second fastest time of the two heats. Beddie cracked the minute for the 100 metres junior boys’ freestyle for the first time in his career, when he won his heat in 59.65ec The team manager (Mr R E. Harding) said that both youngsters had good chances of gaining places in he finals. The Auckland girls’ and boys’ 400 metres medley relay teams also qualified for the finals. The men’s 200 metres final is expected to be the star event on the programme, after some very fast times in the heats. M. Wenden, who earlier in the championships smashed the Australian 100 metres record, is expected to break the two minute barrier for the distance. He has broken two minutes twice previously and is the only Australian to have done so in this country. He clocked 2min I.9sec in

; winning his heat, but the mother qualifiers turned in good times and a fast final appears certain.
