Linton Cup Side Beaten Twice

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand Linton Cup boys’ team lost to Western Australia yesterday morning.

T. Parun lost to A. Hammond 6-8, 6-8, after serving in each set at 5-3 and losing his own service at this stage. J. Simpson was beaten by W. Hodgson 4-6, 6-3, 3-6. Simpson’s game was marred by weak serving and numerous double faults. In the doubles, R. Rae and Simpson combined well to beat Hodgson and Holton 6-4, 6-1. This was a convincing result. With any luck New Zealand could have won this series. In the afternoon it was defeated by Queensland, which has not lost a match to date. Parun lost to an up and coming junior, R. Case, 6-3, 6-4, and Simpson lost to A. Gardner 6-2, 6-3.

Both Parun and Simpson met players who were far too consistent and at no stage did they appear to have a chance of winning. Simpson and Rae lost to

Case and Gardner in a very close doubles contest in which they held a set point in the second. However, the boys generally were lacking on return of service in their matches today. They lost the doubles 7-5, 11-9.
