HOSPITAL THREAT

Fierce Fire In Scrub (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. A fierce scrub fire today threatened Silverstream Hospital and caused nurses there to leave their hostel. The fire, which began on the Eastern Hutt Road early this afternoon in tinder-dry gorse, raced up the scrub-covered hill overlooking the Taita Gorge and came to within 20 feet of the nurses’ hostel. Fanned by a strong wind, the blaze caused firemen to place the Silverstream Hospital staff on the alert for two hours. As the blaze neared the hostel all nurses were ordered out. During the afternoon the wind blew the smoke from the fire down the Hutt Valley where it covered Lower Hutt in a smog shroud. Late tonight the fire had eeased to be a threat to property. \
