The department, however, will retain some of the parking space behind its old premises and limited parking will be available for the Criminal Investigation Branch. Alterations to the building before the C. 1.8. moves in will include the installation of additional partitions, telephone links, and an extension to the police’s national teleprinter link. About 60 police staff will move to the new premises. Besides detectives there will be the information section, typists and the police records staff. However, the Criminal Investigation Branch’s telephone number will remain unchanged. More space will be av liable for the branch in the new quarters than exists in the cramped first floor of the Central Police Station. When the move hrs been completed the police w’ill have office space in three par's of the city. The district police office is at present in the Lyttelton Harbour Board building near the intersection of Madras Street and Chester Street. The Criminal Investigation Branch's move was originally scheduled for January of last year. The move is part of a rearrangement of the central station to permit the demolition of the eastern end of the building. That area and the space
■ previously occupied by the |Y.M.C.A. building will form the site for the tower block of the new central station. In August it was said that tenders for the new station would be called in 1969.
