DAMAGED GEARS

Car May Not Race Canterbury’s best-known racing sports-car, the Stanton Corvette, may not appear at Wigram on Saturday. At the start of the race at Levin, the gearbox failed when the driver, G. Mardon, was changing from second to third gear. C. Stanton said yesterday he had rung drivers and suppliers all over New Zealand in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain a -eplacement cluster gear and third gear for the Borg-Warner TlO gearbox. If any person did have these parts available, he would be grateful to hear from them, he said. Stanton said he had rung the United States for new parts, but there was only a faint chance they would arrive in time for the race. An engineer was trying to repair the damaged gears, but this major task might prove impossible. Even if he succeeded, it was doubtful if the repaired gears would stand the power output of the big Corvette engine.
