(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A > LONDON. Members of the 1967 All Blacks are dominating the choices of “Player of the Year” by British Rugby writers.
Many of Fleet Street’s columnists are in the process of writing their annual reviews of the 1967 Rugby season, and the two who have so far named a New Zealander as their “Player of the Year” are Barry Newcombe (“Evening Standard”) and Pat Marshall ("Daily Express”). Newcombe picked the New
Zealand full-back, W. F. McCormick, and Marshall the All Black captain,'B. J. Lochore.
Newcombe said that his reason for choosing McCormick was the full-back's dependability during the tour. McCormick was frequently under heavy pressure but saved bis team time and time again when a mistake on his part would have opened the way to an opposition try. Marshall said that Lochore. j “captain and inspiration of | the sixth All Blacks.” had no i opposition. His simple mesI sage to British Rugby was [that there is no substitute for the basic virtues—hard work ■ and attention to detail. His story was headlined: I "Lochore’s the Hero of 1967.”
