LEANDER TROPHY

Victory To Mislead (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. R. and G. Knightly, of Whangarei, sailing Mislead, yesterday easily won the second race of five races for the Leander Trophy, the national championship for R class yachts. In contrast to the first race sailed on Tuesday in very light conditions, yesterday's race started in a 12-15 knot south-westerly which gradually increased to 20 knots and more, giving crews a breathtaking ride on .the downwind legs. Numerous capsizes and gear failures caused the withdrawal of nine of the 38 starters. Mislead sailed an immaculate race. Getting away to a good start, she had a narrow lead at the windward mark. Showing exceptional speed on the runs, and holding her own on the beats, she gradually built an unbeatable lead. The first heat winner, Heather (B. Kernott and B. Strahan), of Auckland, was second throughout, and was the only yacht that looked like extending the winner, pi'king up a few seconds on the beats, but losing on th2 runs. Results: Mislead (Wangarei), elapsed time, 2:6:17, 1; Heather (Auckland) 2:8:7, 2: Voodoo 11 (Wellington) 2:10-45. 3; Repeat (Wellington) 2:11:47, 3; Storm (Auckland) 2:12:2. 4. Point*: Heather 180. 1: Mislead 144.444, 2: VOodoO II 103.029, 3; Altezza (Wellington) 101 053, 4; Storm 100, 5.
