WOMEN’S CRICKET
Century By Mrs Coe (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The fast bowler, W. Coe, rescued Wellington with a hard-hitting century in its vital Hallyburton Johnstone women’s cricket championship match against Auckland yesterday. Mrs Coe scored 109 after Wellington had faltered earlier in the match, probably the deciding game of the series. Wellington was all out for 251 and Auckland had scored 31 for one at stumps Mrs Coe batted for 160 minutes.
Auckland, 10 points behind Wellington and in second place in the tournament, must win today to keep its cham pionship hopes alive. The title-holder, Canterbury, was heading for its first win in the other match. With seven first innings wickets standing, Canterbury led Otago by three runs. K. Wilkinson took five for 20 to dismiss the injury-hit Otago side for 105 in its first innings. The opener, L. Murray, scored 38 to give Otago its best start of the series, but only the former New Zealand representative, D Robinson, batting in spite of a broken bone in her leg, was success ful of the later batsmen.
