Gallant Pataudi Makes India’s Last Stand

<N.Z. Press Association—Copyright>

MELBOURNE. Australia won the second test against India yesterday to take a 2-0 lead in the four-match series.

The Australians won by an innings and four runs, with a day and a half to spare.

A magnificent captain’s innings of 85 by the Nawab of Pataudi could not save India from an innings defeat. Batting with the aid of a runner, Pataudi held the Australian bowlers at bay for 157 minutes, in which he hit 12 boundaries. India never recovered from the loss of A. Wadekar in R. B. Simpson’s first over of the day. The left-hander was out to the last ball at 99. one run short of what would have been a maiden century. Bowling his leg spins. Simpson then dismissed Pras

anna, the “nightwatchman.” in his third over, and returned an hour after lunch to dismiss Pataudi. There was no stopping the Australian bowlers after Simpson’s early double breakthrough. D. Renneberg further strengthened Australia's grip when he had the out-of-form C. G. Borde caught by I R. Redpath close to the wicket. STAND OF 55 Pataudi, using Wadekar as his runner, found a resolute partner in Abid Ali, and the pair shared a stand of 55. But R. M. Cowper removed Abid Ali leg-before for 21. Using the new ball after lunch, G. D. McKenzie took the wicket of V. Subramanyam, his tenth victim of the match. But the Australians had to wait nearly an hour before they could break a stubborn

stand between Pataudi and R. Desai. In a savage mauling of the fast bowlers, Pataudi hit 44 out of 53 runs added for the ninth wicket. He was only 15 short of his century when Simpson took his wicket The Indian captain reached his half-Century in 109 minutes. India's hopes of averting an innings defeat were dashed when Simpson held a diving catch off A. Connolly, to dis-

miss Desai, with the total 352. Simpson finished with bowling honours for Australia, taking three for 44 from 14 overs. The four days’ play was watched by 46,488 spectators, with gross gate receipts of $NZ25,520. Scores: — INDIA First Innings 173 Second Innings F. Engineer c Chappell b [ Renneberg .. 42 ;D.
