Johns Road Residents Oppose By-Pass
It would be a waste of money, and unwarranted in view of economic conditions, to divert Johns Road so as to avoid its intersection with Harewood, Russley and Shipleys Roads, five Johns Road residents 'told a Waimairi County Council town-planning sub-committee yesterday. They were objecting to the council’s proposals to build the by-pass to give Johns Road a better alignment and to improve what the council’s town-planning officer (Mr R. M. Parker) described as a dangerous four-road intersection.
“The deviation will by-pass a small built-up area at the western end of Johns Road, and thus avoid a demand for restrictive speed zones,” said Mr Parker.
“The re-alignment is in the interests of the motoring public, and the transport industry, and is considered to be a far better solution than the up-grading of Johns Road be-

tween Sawyers Anns Road and RusMey Road.” Mr Parker said that the main objections appeared to relate to roadside produce stall, and the attraction to them of Johns Road traffic. In letters to the council, Messrs A. G; Smith, B. A. McDonald, A. E. Pruder, and C. R. Bradley (all of Johns Road) and I. M. Brown, Watsons Road, said that the work would be “a complete waste of money” when Johns Road had ample scope for widening. The Church Property Trustees asked to be consulted on the council’s reading plans, as they might conflict with a subdivision.
Selwyn Sawmills, Ltd, opposed the objections, saying the greater use of the Sawyers Arms Road extension was creating a traffic hazard at the Johns Road junction, especially with heavy trucks pulling away after a compulsory stop. The land the new road would take, the company claimed, was of poor quality, and neglected by its owners. The new road should make an Improvement The council’s proposals are to make a road between Harewbod Road and Johns Road, five chains east of their intersection; to make a twochain road between Shipleys Road and unformed Hacks Road; and to amend road widening provisions. There were no objections to an application by Mr B. A. Freeman to erect a produce shop off the Main North Road at Belfast.
Messrs R. D. Ewing and G. C. White, of Islewprtb Road, objected to an application by the Isleworth Free Kindergarten to build a storage shed at 6 Isleworth Road. The chairman (Cr R. C. Neville) said that the committee would, in each case, make recommendations to the council.
