MARGINS TO RISE

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

SYDNEY, Dec. 12. The decision to increase metal trades workers’ margins disregarded the most elementary workings of the Australian labour market under full employment, the Federal Minister for Labour and National Service, Mr Leslie Bury, said yesterday. In the strongest criticism he has made in a wage decision, Mr Bury said: “History will determine if the members of the Arbitration Commission who handed down the majority decisions in the metal trades case came to a calamitous conclusion with lasting consequences for the Australian economy.” Yesterday a full bench of the Conciliation and Arbitration Commission, in a majority decision, granted margin increases ranging from 10c to $10.05 dollars, and said employers could absorb present over-award payments in the new margins. Attempts to absorb margin increases would lead to strikes and stoppages, trade union leaders said yesterday.
