Right Of Airway

Aircraft landing at Darton Airfield, Gisborne, must give way to trains, according to a circular issued by the Department of Civil Aviation. “The attention of pilots is drawn to the signalling system which controls the full length of the runway,” the circular says. “The green light indicates that aircraft may cross the railway line which cuts across the southern end of the 4300 ft field and a red light means that craft must not cross as a train is expected." Festival Postponed The Methven floral festival, which was to have been held today, has been postponed until next Saturday because of the weather. The programme will be much the same as it was to have been today. Wrong Channel? The Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) informed the Canterbury Education Board yesterday that the creation of six more form 1 to 6 high schools and new area high schools had not been unduly delayed and that proposals were going through the usual channels. He expected the Cabinet to make a decision soon. “It seems the scheme just got into the wrong channel,” said Mr R. W. Sansom at a board meeting yesterday when he referred to the board’s concern that no action seemed to have been taken.

No Surplus The Potato Board does not expect there will be any surplus potato stocks requiring a payout to growers this season. The board has advised growers that in view of the market over recent months, it was not calling for declarations of stocks held. The chairman of the board (Mr 1. A. Baxter) said this, of course, did not preclude a grower from putting in a return of stocks unsold, but he thought it most unlikely that the board would receive any claims. A year ago there was a payment of £138,595 on a surplus of 11,641 tons for the 1965-66 season, while in the previous year there was a payment of £108,919 on 9200 tons. Amalgamation A provisional scheme for the amalgamation of Halswell and Paparua counties has been issued by the Local Government Commission. The scheme is on the basis of the terms agreed to by both councils. The scheme is open for inspection at both council offices, and is open to written objections for one month.
