Market Intelligence Service Proposed
“It has been emphasised in earlier reports that a marked lack of communication characterises the industry from the producer along the processing and distribution chain to the ultimate user,” says the chairman of the Wool Marketing Study Group, Mr R. H. Bevin, in a foreward to the group’s final report.
“Unless some attempt is made to establish a better level of intelligence between sections of the industry, any scheme designed to overcome the economic uncertainty which has been one of its main characteristics in the past will be faced with difficulty of application.”
In recommending the establishment of an appropriate market intelligence service, the group report says that at the present time the New Zealand wool industry lacks coordinated market information which is an essential basis for sound policy decisions.
“An authority responsible for the appraisal, purchase and marketing of New Zealand’s wool production cannot function efficiently without the services of an extensive market intelligence service,” says the report. “The information is essential in both the setting of the seasonal payout prices and in the operation of a market reserve.”
