Senior Prize-giving At Papanui H.S.

“The demand for places In the school is much greater for next year than this year,” said Mr E. Fancy, principal of Papanui High School, in his annual report at the school’s senior prize-giv-ing ceremony on Thursday night. “Three hundred and thirtythree new pupils have been accepted for next year, and, in addition, a number have been directed to other schools. Besides the additional new pupils, a further 60 or more pupils have indicated they will be returning next year; this will give an estimated roll of 1080. The roll this year was 990. “This increase will affect particularly the senior school and the average length of stay. It has been noticeable that a smaller percentage has left during this year compared with previous years,” Mr Fancy said. “The roll of the school is limited by its buildings. The board has stated that the ultimate size of the school could be 1200.1 feel that with the present pattern of the buildings, the way they are sited and the difficulty of finding sites without encroaching on the playing areas, which are now scarcely adequate for our needs, the school is fast approaching its desirable maximum.

“I am sure this increase is a direct result of the present economic situation and it will undoubtedly cause accommo-

dation problems. It is necessary to request temporary accommodation to cope with next year’s roll. New laboratories, a craft room and a music room will be needed soon,” he said. Thursday night was the first time in the school's 32year history that the prizegiving had been separated into senior and junior divisions. The junior prize-giving ceremony will be held later. The guest speaker at the ceremony was Mr K. Mitchell, an old boy of the school, who has been in West Pakistan as a missionary for many years and is in New Zealand on furlough.
