HOUSE BURNT
Mr and Mrs A. E. Mitchell, proprietors of the Woodend Beach store, lost their home in Stalkers Road, by fire during their absence on Saturday.
Neighbours had saved only a television set, a table, and a mattress and blankets. Smoke was noticed by several Woodend Beach residents about 3 p.m., but was mistaken for a rubbish fire. By the time an alarm was raised, the house was burning fiercely. Mr D. Wright, a resident of Woodend Beach, who had been passing in his car, and a neighbour, Mr C. Evans, ran into the house but saved only the few articles before the heat and smoke drove them out. They pushed a van to safety.
Fire-fighting units arrived from Rangiora, Woodend, and Kaiapoi, but the firemen could do little except save an unoccupied wooden house next door, owned by Mr J. Thompson, a Dunedin schoolmaster. Its paint was blistered and side windows broken by the heat.
